Gallstones: What Is It?

In some individuals, tiny crystal-like structures called gallstones are formed in the gallbladder, which is situated below the liver. There are various reasons behind the formation of gallstones, like the presence of excess cholesterol or bilirubin in the bile juice present in the gallbladder. The gallbladder stores bile juice secreted by the liver. The role of bile juice is to digest the food and fats in the small intestine. Generally, the bile flows from the gallbladder into the small intestine through the bile duct and digests food. However, gallstones can block the bile duct and prevent bile flow into the colon. The bile stays inside the gallbladder. This causes severe pain, swelling and infection. It can also cause jaundice. Gallstones are treated with gallstone surgery.

Symptoms of Gallstones

Gallstones may not cause any signs or gallstones symptoms. When a gallstone blocks the bile duct, it can result in the following signs and symptoms: - Sudden and severe pain in the upper right side of the abdomen - Sudden and severe pain in the center of the abdomen, just below the breastbone - Pain in the back between the shoulder blades - Pain in the right shoulder - Nausea or vomiting

How to Diagnose Gallstones?

Gallstones can be diagnosed by certain specific tests and procedures. The two most common ones are: Abdominal ultrasound: This is the most commonly used test to diagnose gallstones. A transducer device is moved back and forth across the stomach area. The signals received in a computer are created into images of the gallstones. Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS): In this procedure, an endoscope is inserted into the digestive tract from the mouth. A transducer in the tube produces sound waves, which are then converted into images of the condition. In addition to these, there are also certain other imaging tests which include Oral Cholecystography, Hepatobiliary Iminodiacetic Acid (HIDA) scan, Computerized Tomography (CT), Magnetic Resonance Cholangio Pancreatography (MRCP), and Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangio Pancreatography (ERCP). Sometimes, blood tests are also done to identify infection,gallstone jaundice, gallstone pancreatitis, or other complications caused by gallstones.

What Is the Treatment for Gallstones?

Gallbladder surgery: Your doctor could suggest a cholecystectomy because the gallstones could return. Life after gallbladder removal is unaffected, the process is not life-threatening. The liver will discharge the bile directly into the small intestine rather than retaining it in the gallbladder. Gallstone medications: Some medications dissolve gallstones to help remove them. The dissolution might take months or years to happen. The gallstone may recur once the treatment is stopped.

When Will The Doctor Suggest Surgery?

A gallstone or gallbladder surgery may be recommended when the gallbladder is severely swollen or infected. Two types of surgeries are commonly performed i.e. a laparoscopic surgery (laparoscopic cholecystectomy) or an open surgery (open cholecystectomy).
