Gallstones: What Is It?

In some individuals, tiny crystal-like structures called gallstones are formed in the gallbladder, which is situated below the liver. There are various reasons behind the formation of gallstones, like the presence of excess cholesterol or bilirubin in the bile juice present in the gallbladder. The gallbladder stores bile juice secreted by the liver. The role of bile juice is to digest the food and fats in the small intestine. Generally, the bile flows from the gallbladder into the small intestine through the bile duct and digests food. However, gallstones can block the bile duct and prevent bile flow into the colon. The bile stays inside the gallbladder. This causes severe pain, swelling and infection. It can also cause jaundice. Gallstones are treated with gallstone surgery.

The gallbladder stores bile juice, a digestion-aiding liquid secreted by the liver. There are various reasons behind the formation of gallstones in the gallbladder. These include excess cholesterol or bilirubin in the bile juice stored in the gallbladder. The bile juice moves into the bowel through the bile duct and digests the food. However, when there is a gallstone, it blocks the bile duct, not allowing the bile to move into the bowel. This causes extreme pain. It can also cause jaundice and bile duct infection. Symptoms of Gallstones

The gallstones symptoms may not be visible or noticeable at first. But if a gallstone blocks the bile duct, it can result in the following signs and symptoms: Pain in the upper right side of the abdomen Severe pain in the center of the abdomen, just below the breastbone Pain between the shoulder blades Pain in the right shoulder Nausea or vomiting The gallstones pain lasts several minutes to a few hours.

How to Diagnose Gallstones?

Imaging tests are commonly done to diagnose gallstones. Abdominal ultrasound: This is the most commonly used test to diagnose gallstones. A transducer device is moved back and forth across the stomach area. The signals received in a computer are created into images of the gallstones. Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS): In this procedure, a flexible and thin tube called an endoscope is passed through the mouth into the digestive tract. A transducer in the tube produces sound waves, which are then converted into images of the condition. Blood tests: Blood tests are also helpful in identifying infection, pancreatitis, jaundice, or other complications caused by gallstones. Imaging tests that can be done to detect gallstones also include Oral Cholecystography, Hepatobiliary Iminodiacetic Acid (HIDA) scan, Computerized Tomography (CT), Magnetic Resonance Cholangio Pancreatography (MRCP), and Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangio Pancreatography (ERCP).

What Is the Treatment for Gallstones?

Your doctor may advise cholecystectomy because gallstones may keep coming back. Removal of the gallbladder does not affect one's life. The absence of a gallbladder is not fatal. Instead of keeping the bile in the gallbladder, the liver will release it directly into the small intestine. Gallstone medications: Some drugs effectively eliminate gallstones by dissolving them. It might take months or years for the dissolution to occur. Following the cessation of therapy, the gallstone can return.

When Will The Doctor Suggest Surgery?

The doctor will recommend gallstone surgery when the gallbladder is severely swollen or infected. Two types of surgeries are commonly performed. These are laparoscopic surgery (laparoscopic cholecystectomy) and open surgery (open cholecystectomy).
