Gallstones: What Is It?

The gallbladder is located right below the liver. In some people, the gallbladder produces gallstones, which are small crystal-like objects. The gallstone can range in size from the size of a grain to that of a golf ball. Additionally, although some people have only one gallstone, others have several. Bile juice, a liver-secreted fluid that aids digestion, is stored in the gallbladder. The bile then flows into the small intestine through the bile duct. Extreme discomfort occurs when these gallstones obstruct the bile duct and prevent the disease's flow. Gallstone surgery is used to treat gallstones.

There are various reasons behind the formation of gallstones in the gallbladder. These include excess cholesterol or bilirubin in the bile juice stored in the gallbladder. Symptoms of Gallstones

There may be no visible signs or gallstone symptoms. The following indications and symptoms may appear when a gallstone obstructs the bile duct: - A sharp, sudden abdominal pain on the upper right side - A sharp, sudden abdominal pain in the middle, immediately below the breastbone - Right shoulder pain - Back pain between the shoulder blades - Nausea or vomiting - Gallstone pain might last anywhere from a few minutes to many hours.

How to Diagnose Gallstones?

The diagnosis of gallstones is made with the help of specific tests and procedures. The two most common tests include: Abdominal ultrasound: Abdominal ultrasonography is the most routine test done to look for gallstones or gallbladder stones. A transducer is moved back and forth to probe the stomach area. The probe helps generate signals converted into images of the gallstones. Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS): An endoscope, a little flexible tube, is inserted into the digestive system through the mouth. Sound waves are generated by a transducer that is within the tube. These sound waves are converted into images. Other tests: Gallstones or gallbladder stones are also detected using other imaging tests such as Magnetic Resonance Cholangio Pancreatography (MRCP), Oral Cholecystography, Computerized Tomography (CT) and Hepatobiliary Iminodiacetic Acid (HIDA) scan. Gallstones detected using Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangio Pancreatography (ERCP) can also be removed during the assessment. Blood tests: They are used to check for infections, pancreatitis, jaundice, and other consequences of gallstones.

What Is the Treatment for Gallstones?

Gallbladder removal or cholecystectomy: Your doctor may recommend cholecystectomy as the gallstones keep recurring. Removal of the gallbladder does not affect survival. One can live without a gallbladder. The liver secretes the bile directly into the small intestine instead of storing it in the gallbladder. Medications to dissolve the gallstone: Certain medications dissolve the gallstones. However, the dissolution may take months or years. The gallstone may recur after the treatment is stopped.

When Will The Doctor Suggest Surgery?

When the gallbladder is extremely inflamed or swollen, the gallstone specialist will advise having the gallstones removed. Laparoscopic surgery, or laparoscopic cholecystectomy, and open surgery, sometimes called open cholecystectomy, are two popular surgical procedures.
